How would you complete this sentence? 'Dear 50 Shades of Grey Readers...'

Divided opinions and strong feelings. An entertaining eye-opener for newbies, an inacurate bit of pulp for bored housewives, or a complete waste of time.*

No matter who you talk to, it seems, everyone has an opinion of some sort about this book and/or its impact on the 'scene' as well as on the vanilla world.

We'd like to hear your take on things. Whether you've actually read the book or not doesn't really matter, but it would be great to rather hear about whether you think it has made a difference in the mainstream world and our's...

Love, Aidan x

* PS: I haven't actually heard it being described as 'a great piece of literature' but my little poll was probably less than 100% representative... ;-)

  1. me and my partner have got all 3 and they are ok books (i prefer 50 sheds of grey), it easily could have been more explicit and some bits just aren't really an accurate depiction in my mind but it has opened the scene up to people who would never have considered it and for those who don't know where to look for equipment to start them off anne summers started selling 50 shades inspured bondage gear for beginners. but thats just my opinion

  3. I find it creepy. I'm a rape survivor and have never felt uncomfortable or triggered participating in BDSM activity but reading a few chapters of this book was too much for me. Little ironic XD

  4. That's a very, very interesting point. Thanks for sharing this! I wonder why the perceptions are so different (book vs 'reality') that the imagined story actually becomes offensive... Love & kisses, Aidan xxx

  5. Without going into too much detail, I find that in reality I have been lucky enough to find partners sympathetic to my hang ups who concentrate really hard on making sure consent is always there and that everything is laid out properly so there are no misunderstandings, no boundaries pushed that shouldn't be etc. 50 Shades of Grey on the other hand talks about not doing things without consent but then regularly pushes the consent boundaries with no warning, almost casually, as though that is what BDSM is all about and that just makes me uncomfortable. I know a lot of people disagree and love the books but that's always how I felt about them x

  6. I think this is the worst shit ever written, I regularly have to set fire to these books if seen out in public, giving them flyers to events where they can properly learn about BDSM! I couldn't read all of it, was so appalled by its inaccurate descriptions, I really worry about all the terrible experiences people must have had by following the book! The only good thing to come of it is that is has gone someway to making kink and BDSM more acceptable. it means people new to kink are curiously coming out to events etc, but the sooner all those books are destroyed, the better, I prefer corrupting the innocent safely, unlike that shit book!

  8. Yes, I agree. Not having read the book myself (and really not planning to any time soon) I still feel that this title has indeed opened up the scene in a way to a lot of people who wouldn't have previously thought about it much.

Has it changed perception of BDSM? Again I think yes it probably has. But all this popularity comes at a price...

And as we have no influence on the book itself (or its sales) obviously, I believe it is really important now that we as kinksters and fetishists have a good 'think' about how we deal with people's ideas and expectations about the subject matter.

That is clearly up to us, and we can influence and educate. Perhaps starting with pointing out what is, and what isn't accurate in the book. And how things in our little world really work.

    Love, Aidan xXx

  9. think id have to read them again to point bits out. but yes i totally agree people have read it and entered our domain, now its just time to educate them

  10. Dear 50 Shades Of Grey reader, stop. Put the book down. This is an entirely inaccurate portrayal of BDSM. I know because I read all 3 books to check. I have read much much better (and accurate) fanfiction. Educate yourself and be safe and read something much much better!

  11. I'd have to agree that it's a load of horse tripe of a book. ... having said that, there are *some* of us that like some boundaries to be pushed further because we deliberately set them too narrowly because we would never willingly (an a random example) let someone break the skin with a whipping or paddling, but once we're in the zone and have capitulated to it, rendering ourselves to trust what they do from that point, we can't help but love every second of it.

I wouldn't ever begin to suggest or imagine that everyone who enjoys BDSM is like this. Absolutely not. And I can TOTALLY understand and empathise with that Mia Von Hyde has described and articulated... but for me, I *need* to be pushed beyond what I am comfortable with to be able to get to the happy warm trusting bliss. I don't doubt for a second that if I had gone though something like that which Mia had that I would need something different to that which need now though.

BSDM is a microcosm of the world as a whole. Everyone is different and special in their own unique ways. There's no prescriptive formula for what is right, wrong or what makes someone happy inside.

  12. dear readers.... please remember this is fan fiction written by a woman that wants your money, she knows the right people in the right places and cares less about telling a good story. also understand that works of fiction like this are often very dangerous to those who do not understand what really happens in the kink world.. be smart and be safe
